The article reconstructs the authentic Ascension of Christ scene on the west wall in naos of the Church of Ivanovo Rock Monastery. From the 17 painted figures in the scene, 7 survived today. The 10 figures that were destroyed were painted on a wall, on the site of which today stand the wide passage and the window between the nave and the narthex. Between the two groups of apostles in the center of the first pictorial belt there was a gap between 0.78 m and 0.89 m wide. This gap turned out to be the western apse, where a valuable relic was stored. The type of the relic is described in the scene “Dividing of Christ’s garments” from the second painting belt, which served as a label for the precious relic. The subject matter of the scene indicates that a fragment of Christ’s chiton, which was taken off at His crucifixion in Jerusalem, was kept in the western apse. Most probably this priceless relic was given to the abbot of Ivanovo rock monastery – St. Joachim of Ivanovo (1235 – 1246), by the Nicene (Constantinople) Patriarch German II (1222 – 1240) in 1233, when St. Joachim was ordained by German II by a decision of the Council of Turnovo. The precious object was removed from the monastery to allow a century later Tsar John (IX) Alexander (1331 – 1371) to carve a narthex and esonarthex where his donor portrait was composed.
