Abstract:
This article explore the Byzantine rank hierarchy of the period from 9th to 11th century in its classic form from the Middle byzantine period, i.e. – in the time before the reforms of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. The author examine the various hierarchical pillars of the so-called system of precedence and he made a number of specific observations on the distinct rank levels in the hierarchy of honorary titles in Byzantium.
