Throughout the Middle Ages part of diplomacy consisted of dynastic marriages. In the Balkans they constituted a method often used and specific Balkan dynastic elite was established based on that. From the middle of the XIV-th century a new political force was present in Balkan policy in the face of the Ottoman state. Ottoman diplomacy also utilized dynastic marriages. Initially, they were oriented to persons with the same religion from the world of Islam but with the intervention of Ottoman Turks in Balkan politics those marriages began to happen with ladies from the Balkan Christian dynasties.
