Abstract:

Until today, considerable in its amount correspondence related to the crusades in defence of the Holy Land has been preserved. The aim of the present paper is to explore to what extent the crusade idea propagandized by the Church was present in the personal correspondence of participants in the crusades. In the selected for analysis letters of crusaders who have taken part respectively in the First and the Seventh crusade, a model of presenting the crusades is to be found, which corresponds to the church propaganda. The pathos in the letters, in a way conflicting with the more and more abating crusader enthusiasm, shows the unshakable faith of the western Christian in the exceptional significance of his mission as a warrior of Christ and defender of the Church.
