The Library of Tombul Cami in the Town of Shumen – Formation of the Collection and Its Current State

Abstract:

The article presents the fund of the library created in 1744 with the “Tombul” Mosque in the town of Shumen. Its founder – Sherif Khalil Pasha occupies high administrative posts in the capital of Ottoman Empire. Sherif Khalil was the first who dedicated 220 volumes of manuscripts for the library. Later, the fund of the library enlarges by the donations of many citizens of Shumen and settlements situated mainly in Nord-Est Bulgaria. The library includes also the copies of local scripts. In 1992 the manuscript and printed books of the library has been transferred in the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Sofia for restoration of most damaged codices and for cataloguing of the collection.
