Abstract:

The article deals with tiles, gravures, miniatures and lithographs depicting the holy sites of Mecca (Masjid al-Haram) and Medina (al-Masjid an- Nabawi). The authors draw special attention to two nineteenth-century lithographic depictions, preserved in the mosque of the village of Yasenkovo in the Shumen district (North-East Bulgaria). It is emphasized that all such depictions have a similar composition including the main buildings of the holy sites and their surroundings. Taking into consideration the inscriptions pointing out these buildings the authors provide detailed comments on their historical development.
