Abstract:

The author presents the dates from two sources about the Bulgarian peasants in the 14th century. The both cases represent parts of the peasants’ everyday life. The first of these sources is the Byzantine historian, Nicephorus Gregoras, who describes a group of Bulgarian peasants, near Strymitsa, who have military functions. He visits their village where spend a night. On this basis, the paper analyzed some aspects of medieval settlements, economy and demography in Southeast Bulgaria. The second source describes the meeting of the French Admiral with a Bulgarian peasant in 1396. The French commander is a captive of the Ottomans and the Bulgarian peasant gives him a part of his clothes. The report raised the question of changes in peasants’ lives between these two meetings. Here is a continuity, but there are many changes.
