Socio-economic Profile of the Orthodox Confraternities in Stara Zagora Diocese

Abstract:

The study focuses on the foundation and functioning of the Christian Orthodox societies in Stara Zagora diocese. It reveals the financial functions of the confraternities, determined by the enlightening and charitable objectives of the organization and the social stratification of the members. The main revenue entries of the associations are being considered, formed by membership dues, sale of religious objects and literature, members’ legacies, revenues from lotteries and dinners, from interests in various credit institutions. The financial success of the Orthodox confraternities contributes for conduction of a beneficial social activity expressed in two directions – social and educational.
