Abstract:

This paper presents the findings from field trips in the Pre-Balkan valley near Tarnovo and in the northern slopes of Central Balkan Mountains from 2010 to 2018. The study focuses on narratives related to the local memory of the population living in this area. They contain a mix of both historic data and concepts related to the religious and folkloric interpretations of events, personalities and facts, settling permanently in the way local people looked at the world. Thus, constructing a “cultural code” sui generis, “places of memory”, the Balkan people affirmed their local identity.
