Abstract:

This text poses some questions of a broader, fundamental nature. For example: why does rakia take a central place in our system of values; why is it on a pedestal; why is it not only linked to Bulgarians’ everyday life but capable of re-creating their spirit? The general place and role of this alcoholic beverage in our fellow countryman’s life, along with most of its uses are discussed within this short scientific report. Subsequently rakia is found as a product of the philosophy of an entire society. It is coherent with its superstructure. The conclusion emphasizes the knowledge of old Bulgarians about the composition of rakia from the three primordial elements – earth, fire and water. Together they personify the Bulgarian spirit, or in other words its sacred triad. Therefore, rakia is deeply involved in formation of this ethnic group’s psychology, specific customs, rituals and socio-cultural dispositions. Moreover, even nowadays rakia remains an indisputable indication of national affinity.
