Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to promote the field results of ethnographic expedition in southern France remained unpublished until now. The fieldwork was conducted in the cities of Montpellier, Nimes, Kalvison and Seth. The main task of ethnographic research was to establish the peculiarities of the structure and layout of the Catholic cemeteries and the preconditions for them. The collected materials and observations relate to the Catholic cemetery in the southern French province of Languedoc,covering the period from mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. They include mostly information about their location and organization development and layout of tombstones, revealing some features of features of the burial and commemoration practice Christians-Catholics in this region. The set materials outline the typical appearance of their stone „city of the dead“, with its impressive monumental memorial architecture.
