Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to describe the hygiene standards applicable to conscripts according to military statutes, as well as to reveal some soldiers’ practices in maintaining the cleanliness of the body, clothing, belongings and barracks as a condition for health, good appearance and a pleasant living environment during the mandatory (conscript) military service. The survey covers the period from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, and the analysis is based on personally conducted field study as well as individual bibliographic and archival sources.
