Abstract:

After the First World War in the Kardzhali region there was an increase in the number of schools by type and level of education, as well as in other regions in Bulgaria. The settlement of refugees, who transfer the traditions and values of secular school education from the Aegean and Eastern Thrace to the newly liberated lands, also has a beneficial effect on the development of education in the region. In the structure of the educational system in the period 1919–1941, the public primary schools in terms of the number of children covered are second only to the private primary schools, where students belonging to the Bulgarian-Mohammedan and Turkish population in the region are educated. Despite the opportunities provided for the transformation of private schools into public ones, insignificant results have been achieved. In the settlements with the Bulgarian-Mohammedan population the functioning of public and private primary schools is typical. In comparison with the private Turkish primary schools, the private primary Bulgarian-Mohammedan schools are transformed into public primary schools with the active intervention of the state educational bodies. The region ranks among the first places in terms of the number of undiscovered public primary schools in settlements in the country.
