Abstract:
This article examines the Kuker masquerade of Bulgarian people in its traditional version from the second half of the XIX century to the middle of the XX century and in its present, modern and innovative appearance. There are two main varieties of masquerade games that are based on differences of geographical nature, the way custom is performed, the types of masks and masquerade costumes and places where the kuker(s)” play. The first category is characteristic of the western Bulgarian lands and lands of present-day North Macedonia. The second includes all other Bulgarian lands. This article examines in detail both variants of masquerade games in Bulgarians.
