Abstract:
This text examines the notion of elections, shaped by the Bulgarian humorous
press during four consecutive but very different periods of the country’s modern
and contemporary history. The purpose is to detect the existence of sustainable
elements in the media’s perception of elections for a century and a half. The evolution
of the sign and intensity of political laughter (considered only at specific time points
at regular 50-year intervals) confirms the stable trend of developing a negative perception
of Bulgarian elections in humorous discourse.
