Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present the development and activities of
the Ruse Church Community during the first half of the 19th century.
The genesis of the Bulgarian city municipality, including Ruse, is closely related to
the Eastern Orthodox church-religious communities existing since the early period of
Ottoman rule and under the leadership of the Constantinople Patriarchate.
In the context of the spiritual dependence on the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the
Eastern Orthodox Church-Religious Municipality, formed in Ruse, had the competence
to regulate its church affairs and the relations between the members of the municipality
in terms of economic life, certain acts of civil and family law, life and morals.
Since the late 1930s, as a result of the reforms in the Ottoman Empire, the Orthodox
community in Ruse was given the right to elect its own representatives in the city government,
which enabled it to take an immediate part in addressing important issues
affecting its interests.
