Abstract:
The article examines the new Exarchate Statute of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, in particular its preparation, discussion in the Holy Synod and in Parliament, and adoption in 1895 and 1897. The research is based on historical documents from several central archives, minutes of the Holy Synod, diaries of the National Assemblies, as well as the State Gazette. The main changes and innovations included in the Statute are analyzed. The role of both the Bulgarian Orthodox clergy and the ruling politicians in the adoption of the new church law is emphasized.
