Abstract:

The article examines the changes that occurred in the relative institution of matchmaking after the conversion of the Bulgarians. The analysis is built based on the old Bulgarian legal monuments Law on judging people and the Slavic Eclogue. Ethnographic data from the 19th century, which also document both changes and preserved older elements in the kinship system of matchmaking, are cited as evidentiary material.
