Abstract:
The article takes a new look at the battle between the armies of Tsar Boril and the Latin Emperor Henri near Philippopolis (Plovdiv) in the summer of 1208. For this purpose, the chronicle of the French annalist Henri de Valenciennes, the primary source of the battle, is drawn upon as best as possible. After clarifying the number of soldiers engaged in the battle, it appears that the troops were roughly equal in number. The article also focuses on the biographies of the knights mentioned by the annalist. A conclusion is reached that this was a new generation in the Latin Empire, rising after the death of the original leaders of the Fourth Crusade in the battles with Tsar Kaloyan.
