Abstract:

An interdisciplinary approach is used in the article and it enables an unconventional view on the socio-economic situation in the Bulgarian lands in the middle of the 13th century. It is about a short-lived, but sufficiently serious disturbance in climate, which undoubtedly shook medieval European societies. This is mentioned in a number of historical documents from that time. A climate model for simulating the response of the atmospheric system, proposed by a team of Chinese and American scientists, shows that within the European continent, Bulgaria is the most affected for the longest period of time by this climatic fluctuation. On this basis, an attempt was made to interpret the historical events in the country through the prism of the changed natural conditions.

Keywords:

Medieval period, Bulgaria, volcanic eruption, short-term climatic fluctuation, 13th century, civil war, social unrest.
