Abstract:

The article is focused on the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander (1331 – 1371) because much of the available information concerns his attire. The preserved images are more valuable because they originate from various sources, offering different views and opportunities to highlight common elements and symbols of power. We find preserved images of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander in wall paintings, miniatures, on seals and coins, as well as information about his clothing obtained as a result of archaeological excavations. They have different value as historical sources, but put together depict an informative picture about the formal attire of the medieval Bulgarian ruler. It parallels with that of other Balkan rulers in the 14th century.
