Abstract:

In the present study, an attempt has been made to analyze the image of the “other, foreigner” in the Bulgarian lands as presented in the long and short genres of Bulgarian folklore. Since people are the only living contemporaries of the period under consideration, and therefore, their direct impressions on the subject, expressed in folklore works, are of great importance in building and modeling the image of other peoples in the Bulgarian lands during the five centuries of Ottoman rule. This study attempts to construct a sustainable folkloric image of the Turk, the Greek, the Jew, the Gypsy and, to a lesser extent, the images of the Vlach and the Armenian.
