Gold Coins from the 18th Century Found in the Turkish Bath in the Town of Dobrich

Abstract:

In the second half of the 20th century, a total of 12 gold coins from the 18th century were found in the sewer ditch near the Turkish bath in the city of Tolbuhin (now Dobrich: 11 Ottoman and one European). They are distributed as follows: 8 specimens of Sultan Ahmed III (1703 – 1730); 1 coin of Mahmud I (1730 – 1754); two issues of Mustafa III (1757 – 1774); and one Dutch ducat, minted in 1760 for the province of Gelderland. Almost all of the coins published here (with the exception of the specimen of Mahmud I) are perforated, which clearly indicates their secondary use as jewelry. Most of them are also quite worn, which is a sign that they were in coin circulation. In the period between the 16th – 19th centuries, the perforated gold and silver coins in the Ottoman state retained their purchasing power and participated in monetary circulation along with the unperforated ones, having the same value. The gold coins from the Turkish bath are a valuable source of information about the history of the town of Dobrich. They are an illustration of some of the coins that were in circulation in the 18th century in Hadzhi-oglu Pazardzhik and complement our knowledge of this little-known period in the history of the city.
