Abstract:

The article deals with the question of the ethnic identification of the Scythians, mentioned in the Priscian's work “De laude Anastasii imperatoris” (6th century) as tribes expelled by Flavius Hypatius from the banks of the Danube. The main studies are compared with the historical events of the time of Emperor Anastasius (491 – 518). Based on additional arguments and clarifications, it is concluded that the “Scythicas gentes“ must be understood as the Vitalian's allies across the Danube, the Huns, who joined the revolt after his first march to Constantinople.
