This article focuses on the problems of personhood and catholicity, as they are understood in the context of the Orthodox Tradition and in the framework of the eucharistic ecclesiology. Τheognosis, the knowledge of God, is always a personal experience of the energies of the Tripersonal God and not objective knowledge. Therefore we need to perform an existential reflection upon the category of „personhood“, situated in a relevant context. We have chosen to represent the Orthodox Tradition through the Catholic „property“ of the Church and the praxis of the Divine Liturgy (hereby the Anaphora of st. Basil) as a key element of the same Tradition. We are trying to express the communicative essence of personhood through the Gift as an intermediary ontological category – the gift as participation or „interchange“ of being, an existential synergy or communion with the Donor. Therefore we try to conceptualize the development of the personal communication as a dialectic structure of : gift – acceptance – response gift. The following chain of gifts is then unfolded before us: the personhood as a gift (a trinitary gift of a being, an image and a word, which exists in two modes – catholic and autonomic, the latter defining the schism between self and being); the body as a gift (though mortal and corrupted through the Original Sin, an orphaned „body of Adam“ that may become adopted and incorporated in the „body of Christ“, the Church); the other as a gift (may God be recognized as the „Other“ and the „Neighbor“); the community as a gift (a gift of our unity in Christ and in one another); the Eucharist as a gift (including the acceptance of the original gift and the offering to God of a response gift); the New Gift of Christ‘s Resurrected Body and Blood (which is a catholic being, undetermined in the categories of this world like time, space, etc. and is present in the Holy Spirit on every alter after the consecration in the Divine Liturgy). In the act of this bequeathed Thanksgiving (the Eucharist) we receive and confirm the gift of our being and the image of our self. It is the Hope of meeting Christ in the Thanksgiving with the others, that provokes the free choice of the Eucharist. Therefore we try to speak about the theognosis of the eucharistic community, that is achieved through mysteries in the local church community. 148 This is how we approach the Catholicity of the Church, that constitutes the Church and links all local churches from all times and places in the Catholic Body of the Resurrected Christ. This is what really confirms the eucharistic equivalence of every local church to the others in the light, coming from the Eschaton, that makes the Kingdom come here and now.
