This paper deals with the relationship between the union with God (ontological aspect) and the knowledge of that union (gnoseological aspect). Noticing that there is a general consensus in the orthodox tradition, that the knowledge of God is impossible without union with him, the author pays close attention to the question, whether the union with God is possible even without our knowledge of this union. The author mentions two opposite answer to this question and, based on the texts of St. Maximus the Confessor, elaborates the idea that there is a dynamical interdependence of the ontological and the gnoseological union with God.
