Abstract:
This article discusses existing treaty and judicial mechanisms to counter international maritime crimes. The key role of global and regional cooperation in the formation of common policies at the global and respectively at the regional level is emphasized, and the possibility of converging the positions of states within the existing international organizations is set forth. The author discusses some debatable issues regarding the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and the ad hoc tribunals on charges of maritime crimes. The article concludes that the various preventive mechanisms should be strictly coordinated with each other, and that the effectiveness of the mechanisms for regional cooperation can be increased through the cooperation of the United Nations.
