Abstract:
Asymmetry is the absence or violation of symmetry. Symmetry and asymmetry are important properties of both physical and abstract systems. They are also relevant to linguistics, especially in the context of lexical and grammatical analysis. Asymmetries appear at various stages in the evolution of language at all levels. The absence or violation of symmetry can have important consequences for a system.
Keywords:
linguistic symmetry and asymmetry, violation of symmetry, adaptive asymmetry, compressive asymmetry, asymmetric predicates, empathic asymmetry
