Abstract:

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the regions inhabited by the Illirian population fall under the jurisdiction of the Byzantine Empire, but they keep their religious independence from The Pope in Rome. The two-sided dependence, material on the East and spiritual on the West, reflects on the political, military and religious development of the population in this regions for ages to come. Being situated far from the central authority, on crucial thoroughfares connecting the East to the West, the Illirian population falls under the spiritual and moral influence of different kingdoms and empires. However, evolving during the Early Middle Ages to arbarian, they manage to survive, making good use of the geographical characteristics of the land with its narrow passes and valleys surrounded by harsh mountains, and thanks to the noteworthy tolerance towards foreign religions.
