Language and Identities under the Conditions of Globalization

Abstract:

The author studies the functions of language in the development of human personality, in the history of human societies as well as in the process of forming of the cultural identities of the social groups. It is placed in the centre of the analysis the metamorphoses of identity that occur under the conditions of globalization with a special accent on the societies in transition on the Balkans. The author considers it necessary that the small nations as the Balkan ones should develop autonomous conceptions of cultural policy under the conditions of asymmetric mono-centric globalization – if they want to avoid the pernicious traps of the strategy of contingent modernization, cultural dependence, and cultural colonialism.
