Abstract:

The amalgam of historical, political, ethnical-cultural, religious, mental and economic boundaries on the Balkans bears the lasting marks of the constant rivalry for control and influence over this crossroad land. The interaction of a complex of factors which the functionalism of Gutman classifies into two categories – “movable” and conservative – delimits at each stage of the historical development of the region the particular system of states with their territories and boundaries. More than ever the boundaries of the Balkans, filled with content, need new perusal. It requires that the stress should be put on the overcoming of their barrier structure – infrastructural, economic, and psychological and on their transformation from zones of confrontation and economic isolation into zones of active co-operation.
