Abstract:

The subject of the text offered bellow focuses upon the fictional and philosophic perspective of the famous South-Yugoslavian novelist Ivo Andriæ, the former being read and analysed through the novel The Chronicles of Travnik. Stress is laid on the predestined fate of the Balkan people, dashed on them by history. As a crossroad of diverse events and cultures, the Balkans transform one’s personality into an unprotected and submissive to the events, irrespective of one’s will. This applies both to those who were born and whose roots originate from the peninsular world, and to those who came from abroad. Placed amid the local and beyond the national, between yesterday and tomorrow, between a dream, a reverie and reality, Andriæ’s novel deciphers the codes of the Slavic-Balkan soul in a new manner.
