Abstract:

The paper presents the state of the parish network in the nahiye of Vidin in the 16th–18th centuries. The study is based on fragmentarily preserved mufassal and dzhiziye registers, as well as on other kinds of Ottoman documents issued by the local administrative and judicial authorities. The three basic elements of each parish community – priest, church and congregation, are presented in the text. Unlike the other nahiyes in the territory of the sandzhak of Vidin, there is a significant concentration of clergy in the town of Vidin itself. The reason for this intensity lies in the great number of its population, as well as in the fact that Vidin was at the same time a centre of a sandzhak and a bishopric.
