Abstract:
The “European Capital of Culture” Project helps to promote the rich and diverse European cultural heritage, as well as the mutual understanding of EU citizens. The “European City of Culture” Project was launched by the Council of Ministers on June 13th 1985. Its purpose is “to contribute to the convergence of the European nations”. In 1999, the project was renamed the “European Capital of Culture”. Under Decision № 1622 of October 24th 2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union, in 2019, European capitals of culture will be cities of Bulgaria and Italy. Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Russe, Shumen, Veliko Tarnovo, Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil already expressed their intention to participate in the competition.
