Abstract:

Space and boundary are basic geographical concepts widely used not only in research and education but also in everyday life and communication between people. Originally, space is seen as the area around people and affects their existence. It is also the territory, in which they find sources for their survival (food and shelter). In it most wide understanding this concept of space has not changed. From a philosophical point of view, space, as a basic form of existence of matters, is inextricably linked with time and motion. From a cognitive point of view, the development of the geographical knowledge goes from description of some areas and their spatial relationships to the attempts for “connecting” the geographical space and time and forming a philosophical understanding of space. Later space is conceived as a geographical category, which as a form of existence of the geographical objects and as a method for the study of events, facts, and processes which occurred in the space. Geographical space accepts as existence of geographical objects and phenomena within the geographical sphere of the earth. It reflects the complex structure of the geographical sphere and therefore its dismemberment into particular geospaces is possible. Each geospace has its own characteristics – structure, system, dynamic and metric properties. It evolves and changes according to the certain dynamics. As an expression of the spatial aspect of objects and phenomena, there is a scientific concept for geographical environment. It includes the whole complex of natural conditions, affecting the development of human society and possessing certain characteristics: dynamics, strong influence by the human factor in the direction of expansion and formatting of specific interactions, influence of the human and demographic potential. It is assumed that the geographical environment can be seen from two different view points – as physio-geographic and as economic-geographic environment, according to items included in it. Separateness of the geographic space is associated with the presence of boundaries. In purely geographical sense, the concept of “border” does not exist. But because of its genuine philosophical content, the geographical border always has certainty. According to the objectives, it is possible to identify and distinguish between different types of boundaries – according to the nature of the phenomena or according to the manner of their separation. The dynamic nature of geographical knowledge, especially as social, political and cultural geographic knowledge, determines the complexity of the used concepts. The controversial public policy requires constructiveness and creativity in formulating accurate conclusions and setting current models.
