Abstract:
The paper discusses the significance of the existence of barriers and bridges in the Balkans in literal and figurative sense, through the prism of the historical-geographical approach. They are either a material expression of processes that happened in history, or a geographical product, influencing their speed and direction. Often changing their affiliations according to the view of life of man and his understanding about the meaning of life, they legitimate the Balkans as a compressed model in miniature of the heterogeneity and the heterotemporality of Europe and the West. If the barriers in the Balkans, mental and real, are an objective political-geographical and geopolitical reality, the bridges are materialized state of mind.
