Abstract:

Bossul Haydutin’s feats – legitimacy of the boundary between the paragon and the parody (Todor Mollov) The feats of the hayduts in the folklore songs lead to the actions of the adolescents in the gender-age initiation rituals. The songs about Bosul describe a passage from the status of a rejected and disregarded lad to a haydutin who has proved his abilities superior to others. The plot is constructed on the grounds of some typical trickster moves. The subject of proving personal potential also has deeply individual psychological dimensions that become significant in the process of construction of the new type of hero in the XVII and XIX centuries. In a similar situation the songs about Bosul can become a paradoxical model for imitation by the ordinary man who discovers a secondary legitimacy through the song and declares that with a custom-made inscription on a trophy sword.
