Abstract:

The article examines the process of recognition of the Republic of Macedonia by the Republic of Bulgaria, focusing on the risks and opportunities faced by the Bulgarian political élite. The Consultative Council on National Security (CCNS) meeting, held on 15th January 1992, is examined, where the decision to recognize the new state was made. The attitudes of the Balkan states, EC, USA, and Russia towards the four former Yugoslav republics are observed. In the background of the dramatic dissolution of Yugoslavia and the formation of a new regional order, the Bulgarian foreign policy demonstrated independence and adherence to principles for the first time after 1944. It declared its position as an unignorable political factor in the Balkans.
