Abstract:
The paper refers to Emanuel Salomon Friedberg-Mírohorský, а 19th-century Czech intellectual who travelled to the Balkans and wrote a journal about Romania. He was an officer in the Austrian army, a painter, and a promoter of healthy eating. He spent about seven months in Romania in 1856, during which he wrote the journal. It contains memories of the military mission to the Wallachian Principality in 1856. It was published in Prague in 1896. 166 years ago, the traveller objectively observed aspects that have remained intact to this day. He described the Romanian culinary traditions of village households, as well as of the city, which he compared with those from the Czech Republic.
