Abstract:
2021 marked the 500th anniversary of the first written document in Romanian language – Neacșu’s Letter (1521). Half a millennium later, this text is still comprehensible to Romanian speakers and bears witness to the linguistic unity between the three Romanian provinces then and now. The article considers some of the lesser discussed issues: the context of the document’s appearance, the accuracy of the historical information, the military intrigues of that era, and how the author made them relevant to the recipient at the time and to the reader of today. The article provides a new perspective on a text of only 200 words containing valuable historical, cultural and linguistic information.
