About the Journal
Bulgarian Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Institute of Bulgarian Studies at St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, which continues the legacy of its predecessor of the same name (12 volumes from 1996 to 2012) (see Bulgarian Studies – Archive). It is intended for researchers, lecturers, students, and a wide range of readers from Bulgaria, Europe, and around the world.
The journal publishes original articles in Bulgarian covering all major areas of Bulgarian studies: the Bulgarian language, literature, history, and culture, including Bulgarian studies abroad and interdisciplinary research. The selection of manuscripts submitted for publication is based on an assessment of their originality, significance, and scholarly contributions. The journal publishes research by Bulgarian and foreign scholars and strives for high professionalism and recognition as a scholarly publication characterized by the depth and thematic diversity of its materials, which address both synchronic and diachronic aspects. Its goal is to contribute to the development of scholarly knowledge, to increase interest in Bulgarian studies, and to promote the Bulgarian language, literature, history, and culture by combining traditional and innovative ideas and approaches. It covers important events in the academic world both in Bulgaria and abroad—conferences, seminars, congresses, and exhibitions. It publishes reviews of newly released books in the field of Bulgarian studies, as well as interviews with Bulgarian and foreign scholars specializing in Bulgarian studies. The journal also plans to publish thematic issues.
The journal is open to all authors (Bulgarian and foreign) whose submissions align with its thematic focus and meet the established publication requirements. It places special focus on early-career scholars and the opportunity for first publications.
Articles that have already been published, accepted for publication, or are under consideration by another journal should not be submitted to Bulgarian Studies.
Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal’s academic and editorial standards will not be reviewed or considered for publication.
Submitting for publication in the journal any texts or materials that are automatically generated using artificial intelligence systems—whether in whole or in part—is strictly prohibited.
No fees are charged to authors for publication, peer review, or preparation for print.
The journal’s editorial board comprises Bulgarian and international scholars with established national and international standing.
Frequency
The journal is published twice a year: in April (Issue 1) and October (Issue 2). Submissions may be made throughout the year and will be assigned to the corresponding upcoming issue. Only materials in Bulgarian are accepted. Materials should be sent to the journal’s email address (balgaristichni_prouchvania@ts.uni-vt.bg).
Distribution
Printed copies are distributed through the interlibrary loan system to university libraries in Bulgaria and to other libraries abroad.
To ensure the unlimited and secure preservation of publications, the entire full-text content of the Journal of Bulgarian Studies is archived and made available on various platforms. (procedure in progress)
The electronic version is available on the website of the Institute of Bulgarian Studies and on the website of the University Publishing House.

History
The first issue of the Bulgarian Studies series was published in 1996, edited by Prof. Dimitar Kenanov, Ph. (then Assoc. Prof., PhD), as a publication of the International Summer Seminar on Bulgarian Language and Culture. As noted in all subsequent volumes, Prof. Dimitar Kenanov, PhD, is the founder of the series.
The first issue primarily includes the papers from the First International Scientific Session on Bulgarian and Slavic Studies, held from 20 to 22 August 1995, in Veliko Tarnovo, at the initiative of the Seminar’s leadership at the time—Prof. Dimitar Kenanov and Prof. Tsenka Ivanova. The authors are from Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Spain, Russia, and Yugoslavia.
Until 2012, it was published once a year. Over the years, the series has maintained its interdisciplinary character.
The directors of the International Summer Seminar on the Bulgarian Language serve as editors-in-chief, and the editorial boards include leading figures in Bulgarian and Slavic studies in Veliko Tarnovo as well as university professors, among them Prof. Georgi Danchev, Prof. Angel Davidov, Corresponding Member Prof. Stoyan Burov, Prof. Rusin Rusinov, Prof. Nikolay Kolev, Prof. Plamen Pavlov, Prof. Kiril Tsankov, Prof. Maria Spasova, and others. Various editorial teams have worked on the publication of individual issues.
Over the years, Bulgarian Studies has published articles by both leading figures in Bulgarian and Slavic studies in Bulgaria and abroad, as well as by young scholars. Among the established authors who have made significant contributions to the development of Bulgarian and Slavic studies are: Ivan Radev, Rusin Rusinov, Ivan Haralampiev, Elka Konstantinova, Jerzy Rusek, Mari Vrina-Nikolov, Stoyan Burov, Nevyana Doncheva-Panayotova, Mariya Spasova, Ludwig Selimski, Dimitar Kenanov, Vera N. Glivinskaya, Tatiana Braga, Konstantinos Nihoritis, Plamen Pavlov, Daniela Andrey, Gocho Gochev, Anton Getzov, Todor Mollov, Mariana Georgieva, Venelin Grudkov, Zhivka Koleva-Zlateva, Anastasiya Petrova, Mariola Mostovska-Deliev, Stegan Anchev, etc.
A number of articles in the journal are by young authors, doctoral candidates, and students, most of whom participated in the International Summer Seminar, and some of whom are publishing for the first time: Petya Karamfilova, Maxim Makartsev, Nadezhda Popaz-Kula, Holger von Rauch, Maria Raevska, Biljana Vasic, Evelina Novakowska, Marinela Dimitrova, Katina Dimitrova, and others. Many of them are continuing their successful academic careers.
The covers of the journal (Issues 1–7) were designed by artists from Veliko Tarnovo—Prof. Boris Zhelev and Prof. Hristo Tsatsinov.
