Abstract:
This article presents the role of Operational Programme “Regions in Growth“ and the use of the funds in its framework, granted by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund on behalf of different groups of beneficiaries from the Veliko Tarnovo region in the second programming period 2014–2020. The development of the region corresponds to the goals of the EU’s regional policy for sustainable urban development through a set of measures and actions which deal with specific urban challenges, including overcoming the economic, social and demographic problems, as well as to the national and regional objectives and priorities for development of the Republic of Bulgaria. The EU grants under the operational programme are of key importance for the sustainable development of the country as a member state of the Union, and of the Veliko Tarnovo region in particular. This determines the need for evaluating the effectiveness of the funds used in the framework of the programme on the one hand, and for providing relevant information and recommendations to the managing authority and to the beneficiaries for the next programming period on the other hand.
