Abstract:

Road transport occupies the leading position in passenger and freight transport on the European transport market. Public bus transport has a number of advantages over travel by other means of passenger transport, the main of which are: high maneuverability during movement, the ability to quickly change routes, small initial capital investments, effective operation with different sizes of passenger flows. This report analyzes changes in the demand for bus transport in the European countries where official statistical information is available. Trends in the number of passengers transported, the amount of passenger transport work performed and changes in the average distance traveled by one passenger are observed. The analyzed period (from 2018 to 2023) covers the time before, during and after the global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The main objective of the study is to track the demand dynamics for bus transport in European countries and, based on the findings, to make recommendations for the sustainable future development of their public road transport.
