Domestic Leisure Tourism Supply in Bulgaria: Situational Analysis

Abstract:

Tourism constitutes an important sector in Bulgarian economy. Domestic tourism proved its key economic role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its significance in overcoming the consequences of this health crisis that affected the tourist sector is undeniable. This paper aims to provide information on the current domestic tourism supply in Bulgaria. To this end, a situational analysis was conducted to present the current state of the offered tourist services. The study concerns the natural and man-made tourist resources, transport infrastructure and accommodation facilities in Bulgaria, as well as the different types of tourism practiced by the Bulgarians. The research uses statistical information provided by the Bulgarian authorities, the National Statistical Institute, scientists, etc., as well as data from a national representative survey utilizing a two-stage, stratified random sample of Bulgarian citizens from different Bulgarian districts. Conclusions and recommendations are provided in order to improve the quality of tourist services and attract more domestic tourists.
