Review by Stela Valerieva Georgieva, PhD on the monograph of Professor Lachezar Georgiev Pages from the history of the book: Publishing and print communications in the Balkans and Europe (Veliko Turnovo: St. Ciril and St. Methodius University Press, 2014. – 420 p. : ill.). The monograpfy PAGES FROM HISTORY OF THE BOOK (Publishing and print communications in the Balkans and Europe) by professor doctor Lachezar Georgiev Georgiev, consists of three main parts. The first part of the book: “A retrospective review of printed communications and book 1806–1944” includes research on book publishing, publishing and printing activities in the first half of the nineteenth century and up to 1878 traces the publishing activities and the development of print communications throughout the Ottoman Empire; Bulgarian typography abroad during this period; and the contributions of the better-known publishers, printers, booksellers in Bulgarian Revival. Made an overview of the book and publishing work after the Liberation and in particular of the early twentieth century until 1944 as Professor. L. Georgiev focuses on prominent Bulgarian Publishers - Dragan Manchov, Elijah R. Bluskov, Hristo Danov. Is quoted correspondence between the publisher Elijah Bluskov with writer Vasil Droumev (Bulgarian bishop of Veliko Tarnovo Metropolitan Kliment Branitski) and authoritative Bulgarian scientist prof. Ivan Shishmanov. Examined the activity of printing-publishing centers of publishing and printing activities like Veliko Tarnovo, Svishtov, Rousse, Plovdiv, the Kyustendil, Sevlievo, Varna, Burgas, etc. In the first part of the monograph provides space for emblematic of Bulgarian manuscript and its projections in Bulgarian books published up to 1878 are given examples with illustrations of Bulgarian media. Also in the first part of the book, in the chapter “Printed communication from the early twentieth century to nationalization” are considered mergers and joint activities longtime publishers publishing family between 1918–1944, the pointed out the contribution of book publishing “Hemus” but also monitored the successful operation of Publishing in Sofia: “Stoyan Atanasov”, “Todor Filipov Chipev”, “Kazanlak valley”, “Hristo G. Danov”, “Mircho G. Smrikarov”, “Ancient Bulgaria”, “Alexander Paskalev” “Zheko Marinov” “Ivan Kuyumdjiev”, “Dobromir Chilingirov” and others. Carry out screening and a significant shareholder and corporate publishing companies in that period. The second part of the book “Traveling with Books” includes three texts reflecting trips prof. L. Georgiev around the Balkans and Europe, with the idea to study the book and print communications in three major center of literary culture in Banja Luka, Moscow and St. Petersburg. The reader is given the opportunity to travel with the author in these cities - centers of highly developed printed communications and typography. The third part of the book: “Literary Lisbon” is designed as an independent study on the work of Portuguese writers Esa de Queiroz, Jose Saramagu, Mario de Carvalho, Juau Aguiar, Maria Teresa Maya Gonzalesh, Jose Manuel Mendes, Jose George Letriya, Jose Rodrigues dos Santos, Luiz Gonzaga Ferreira and other authors whose works have been translated in Bulgaria. However, in this part of the other writers who are not translated in Bulgaria - Anabela Natario and Fernanda Serrano. Consider the operation of modern Portuguese publishers and printers of Lisbon print media Diario de Notisias, and also other print media in Lisbon.
