The collection State and Problems of Bulgarian Onomastics contains modern onomastic studies of great importance for the development of research on toponyms, oikonyms, hydronyms, urbanonyms, and anthroponyms. The compilers’ work is aimed at studying the development of the -onyms in synchronic and diachronic terms, as well as the standardization of names (oikonyms, toponyms, and hydronyms) in Bulgaria. Apart from a practical application, the study of local and personal names also has cultural significance. The research into micro-toponyms (local names) is of historical significance, as it allows to reveal the ethno-cultural strata of a certain region (settlements, displacements, material and spiritual culture), and to draw important conclusions about the people’s ethnogenesis.
