The formation of short Christian names of Slavic origin in Old Bulgarian anthroponymy

Abstract:
The present article aims at presenting word-derivational methods by means of which short (one component) Christian names of Slavic origin were formed in Old Bulgarian. They are three in number. On contraction of two-component anthroponyms one of the components was dropped and the short name was formed from the other one. In the process of derivation from the stem of a proper name a multitude of short names was formed by means of suffixes. The third method is conversion in which various parts of speech have come to function as proper names.
