Abstract:

It is a well-known fact that some names can be repeatedly found in the onomastics of the Balkans. Names such as Bistritsa, Gradishte, Grivitsa, Radomir, Roman, Sushitsa, Slatina, Tuzla, etc. figure as oikonyms, hydronyms, toponyms, urbanonyms, etc. on the maps of two, three, or even more Balkan countries at the same time. The reasons for their existence, without ignoring the possibility for a coincidence, can be various, for example ethnic interpenetration, influences between languages, memoironymy, pilgrimage, etc. The oikonym Targovishte takes a special place among the recurring names. It appears to be rather common on the Balkan Peninsula. At least 10 settlements in 5 countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia) bear or have borne that name.
