Abstract:

In this article the author examines etymology of different types of antique place names of the Roman province of Europe: Apri, Aprus, Artēscus, Astica, Athyra, Be(o)dizos, Bergula, Bisanthe, Bizye, Burtudiza, Burzaona, Cardia, Coelia, Cylas, Daunioteichitae, Delcon, Delta, Derkos, Dixas, Dolonci, Drusipara, Erginos, Ganos, Gestistyrum, Kontadesdus, Kympsala/Kypsela, Madytos, Mērizos, Odrysa, Orni, Ostudiza, Panion, Perinthus/Perinthia, Poltymbria, Puli, Raedestus, Rhēsion, Rhēsus, Ruzion, Sadamē, Saltica, Savada, Selymbria, Serioteichitae, Sēstos, Tarpodizos, Tearus flumen, Thynia, Tyrodiza, Tzimpe,Tziorikellos, Tzurlōt, Tzurulus, Tzurtam, Uscudama, Zorlanae. Under thorough investigation are the graphic forms, the etymology, the semantics and the identification of antique and medieval placenames. The results of the etymological analysis are verified by data of historical topography and archeology.
