Abstract:

The paper presents a research concerning the names of mosques in the town of Omurtag existing during XІX and XX centuries and some of them until the present day. It aims to look into the naming and renaming as a social and linguistic phenomenon. In order to achieve better results the research is centred on linguistic analysis of the etymology of names and the motives behind renaming of mosques. In conclusion, a short classification of the names in different groups is also made.
